Call for Entries--Green Works Houston
DEADLINE October 17th by 5PM (Installation-Ready Work ONLY)
AIA Houston, HAF, and USGBC Houston are looking for boards, models, publications, and manuscripts of built projects, case studies, new ideas, concept design, and research to include in an upcoming exhibition on green building in Houston. This exhibit is intended to inform and inspire both the general public as well as those in the design and construction industry. Submissions must be in the Houston area. The exhibition will be juried by a panel of regional experts. A publication will accompany the exhibit with articles on Houston’s green resources and initiatives.

Call for entries: PDN/National Geographic’s World In Focus contests
National Geographic Traveler and Photo District News are seeking the very best
professional and amateur travel photographs for their annual World In Focus
contests – and the deadline is fast approaching!
For professionals, the Grand Prize winner will receive free tuition for a 6-day professional photography workshop in Santa Fe, New Mexico, one Nikon D-80 Digital SLR, an Expedition tripod and head, a NG5737 backpack, and a PDN PhotoServe portfolio. Category winners (travel portraits, outdoor scenes, sense of place, spontaneous moments, and photo essay) will each receive one D-60 kit, a Tundra photo/video tripod, a NG2475 shoulder bag, and a PDN PhotoPlus Expo Gold Pass. Fees are $35 per entry.
For amateurs, the Grand Prize winner will receive a 15-day trop for two to Antarctica aboard the National Geographic Endeavour. The runner-up will receive a trip to the Cliffs Preserve in Patagonia, Chile; 3rd Prize includes a cruise for two on a Maine Windjammer schooner; 4th Prize includes and a seven-day photography workshop in Oaxaca, Mexico. Fees are $12 per entry.
Select winning images from both contests will be displayed at the PDN PhotoPlus Expo October 23-35. Winning amateur images will be featured in the January/February edition of National Geographic Traveler, and winning professional images will be featured in a winners gallery in PDN’s February 2009 issue, online at pdnonline.com.
Entry deadlines: August 21, 2008; pay $10 additional per entry for an
extended deadline of September 8.

Arts in Action at the Political Conventions!
Join us in Denver or Minneapolis/St. Paul! Americans for the Arts Action Fund, in conjunction with NAMM, the National Association of Music Merchants, will be hosting two events at the upcoming national political conventions. Titled, "The Future of the Arts and Arts Education" these events are designed to engage Members of Congress, Governors, Lt.Governors, Mayors, local elected officials, education and cultural leaders attending the conventions. Both events are part of ArtsVote2008, the national initiative the Americans for the Arts Action Fund has been running throughout the presidential election. At the Democratic National Convention on August 26th, a panel of elected leaders, advocates, and philanthropists will discuss the future of the arts and arts education in America. Moderated by Former U.S. Secretary of Education and former Governor of South Carolina Richard Riley, featured speakers include:
- Five-time Grammy Award-winning musician John Legend
- Miami Mayor Manuel Diaz, President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors
- Philanthropist Sheila C. Johnson
- NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond.
- Americans for the Arts Action Fund President and CEO Robert L. Lynch
On September 2nd at the Republican National Convention, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee will moderate a discussion on the future of the arts and arts education in America with featured speakers including:
- Emmy Award-winning actor, dancer, choreographer and director Debbie Allen
- Missouri Governor Matt Blunt
- Chairman of the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities Adair Margo
- U.S Representative Todd Tiahrt (R-Kansas)
- Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne
- Americans for the Arts Action Fund President and CEO Robert L. Lynch

Call to Artists: Women on Women at Elder Street Gallery
Elder Street Gallery will be doing a show on Oct 11 called Women on Women. The show will be viewing the world from a woman's perspective. All art should deal with with woman's issues, or women in general. Four images should be submitted to me by E-mail by Aug 31. Please list the name and the price with each image so that I do not have to get back later to get that information. All images should be 300 dpi so that selected images can be used for the newspapers etc. I will be hanging no less than two works from each artists and maybe three depending on what is submitted. I will make a decision by Sept 4th on which pieces will show. Cost to be in the show $20 that will cover wine, food etc. as usual. Submit all photo's to elderstreetgallery@gmail.com.

Skateboard design competition

DWRs Austin Studio invites you to participate in the Design the Modern Board competition, sponsored by No Comply Skate Shop (www.nocomplyatx.com). Graphic designers throughout Texas both established and aspiring are encouraged to submit graphics for a modern skateboard design. Submissions will be displayed at the event on September 18, to be judged by local figures in the skateboard and design industries. The winning designer will have their graphics produced on a board by No Comply.
Submissions must be received not later than 7pm on September 12.
