New York, NY—Artadia: The Fund for Art and Dialogue is very pleased to present the Artadia Awards to 10 artists living and working in Houston, Texas. For three intensive days (May 15-17), three internationally prominent jurors — Franklin Sirmans (Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, The Menil Collection), Jennifer Gross (Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Yale University), and Christopher Eamon (Curator, Pamela and Richard Kramlich Collection and Executive Director, New Art Trust) — conducted studio visits with 15 short-listed artists drawn from over 200 applicants throughout Harris County, Texas. The awards range from $15,000 to $1,500.

Artadia Awardees 2008 Houston at the $15,000 level are Delilah Montoya, Katrina Moorhead, and Floyd Newsum, Jr. The seven recipients of the $1,500 awards are Mequitta Ahuja, Dawolu Jabari Anderson, Katy Heinlein, Lauren Kelley, El Franco Lee II, Lynne McCabe, and Stephanie Toppin.

Christopher Vroom, Artadia Founder and Board President, says about Artadia’s Houston Awards program: “It is particularly gratifying to be a part of Houston’s vibrant cultural community at a time of vigorous civic debate. The artists selected for this year’s Artadia Awards exemplify the diversity of artistic practice and perspective that makes ours a great society. They underscore the varied roles that artists play in our communities—their practice, their viewpoint, and their deep engagement in civic and educational life not only help us see the world in new ways but make us want to be involved in a positive way. It is a great gift indeed.”

“Arts and culture are core to Houstonians’ quality of life. A vibrant arts community in a large and diverse city like ours is a critical piece of not only what makes Houston more livable, but also more competitive in the global marketplace,” said Houston’s Mayor Bill White. “We’re grateful for Artadia’s awards program and long-standing commitment to our community.”

Applications for the Artadia Awards were open to visual artists at any stage of their career who are working and living in Harris County. The application was available online for three months, January 15 – May 15, 2008. The three first round jurors — Franklin Sirmans, Sue de Beer (artist, New York and Berlin), and Mark Bessire (Director, Bates College Museum of Art) — reviewed a regional record number of 210 applications and selected the finalists in New York in mid-April.

Artadia has long-standing close relationships with the local foundations and private patrons of the arts who recognize the importance of unrestricted funding to visual artists at the local level. Houston partners include DiverseWorks Artspace, which has hosted the Artadia Awards exhibitions in the past, as well as the Lawndale Center for the Arts, where Artadia held this year’s well-attended information session in February. The Artadia Awards 2008 Houston are supported by the Houston Endowment, Inc., numerous generous individuals, and the Artadia Board. VSA arts Invites Entries From Young Artists With Disabilities for Green Light Awards

VSA arts Invites Entries From Young Artists With Disabilities for Green Light Awards

Sponsored by VSA arts with support from Volkswagen of America, Inc., the Green Light Awards program is open to young artists ages 16 to 25 living in the United States who have a physical, cognitive, or mental disability. A disability is defined as an impairment that substantially limits a major life activity. The program invites entries of both representational and abstract work. Artwork may illustrate actual aspects of what signals the artist's creative motivations such as the physical world or personal discoveries. Abstract work that relates to feelings or emotions is also encouraged. Work might also reflect the artist's experience of living with a disability and its role in shaping or transforming their work.

Art must be an original work that has been completed in the last three years. Eligible media include paintings and drawings (oil, watercolor, acrylic, pencil, or charcoal), fine art prints (lithographs, etching, intaglio, or woodcuts), photography, computer-generated prints and two-dimensional mixed media. This year the program also welcomes entries of sculpture and time-based media (video, film, etc.).

The program will award one Grand Prize of $20,000, one First Award of $10,000, one Second Award of $6,000, and twelve Awards of Excellence of $2,000 each.
